Remote sensing image covering a local region of the Bohai Bay by the China’s new-generation ocean color observation satellite
The cover image presents a 20-meter resolution remote sensing image of Tianjin Port and its adjacent waters, acquired by the second-generation Coastal Zone Imager (CZI2) aboard China's new-generation ocean color observation satellite on January 19, 2025. This image distinctly reveals the characteristic color signatures of inflowing rivers, port infrastructure, and surrounding waters. The CZI2 possesses synergistic observation capabilities with its 20-meter resolution multispectral bands and 5-meter resolution panchromatic band. Data acquired by the sensor can be effectively applied in research domains including monitoring of coastline changes, assessment of coastal engineering projects, studies of estuarine ecosystems, and retrieval of environmental parameters in nearshore waters. Successfully launched on November 16, 2023, the satellite is also equipped with a second-generation ocean color and sea surface temperature scanner (COCTS2) and a Programmable Medium-Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (PMRIS). Through their multi-resolution, multispectral synergistic observation approach, these sensors provide crucial data support for monitoring of marine disasters, marine ecosystems, marine resources, and global oceans and polar environments.
