Remote-sensing image of the Eastern Atlas Mountains captured by the “Geology-1” satellite
The cover image shows a remote-sensing image captured by the Geology-1 satellite over the transition zone where the eastern Atlas Mountains meet the Sahara Desert in Africa. Warm cinnabar tones blend with cool, shadowed ridgelines, creating a striking geomorphological contrast. Geology-1, developed by the China University of Geosciences and the China Aero Geophysical and Remote Sensing Center for Natural Resources, was launched on 17 May 2025 as China’s first hyperspectral remote-sensing satellite dedicated to geological applications. Equipped with VNIR and SWIR imaging detectors covering a geology-optimized 410–2480 nm spectral range, the satellite enables accurate extraction of diagnostic mineralogical signatures even under complex surface conditions. It provides essential remote-sensing support for geological mapping, mineral resource surveys, structural analysis, and ecological–environmental monitoring.
