the "Haishao-2 / AIRSAT05" satellite
This cover image is a dual-polarization false-color composite acquired on October 28, 2025, by the "Haishao-2 / AIRSAT05" satellite in TOPSAR wide-swath imaging mode over the coastal region of the Laptev Sea, Arctic. The sinuous, bright yellow ribbon represents the main channel and distributaries of the Lena River Delta, exhibiting pronounced high backscattering characteristics. The extensive area to the north, colored in yellow-green and bluish-purple hues, corresponds to sea ice of varying forms and thicknesses, intricately intermixed with dark blue open water, displaying clear textural variations. At the Lena River's estuary, the sea ice edge forms a fragmented and mixed transition zone. The image accurately depicts the influence of riverine freshwater input on sea ice formation and the detailed coastal ice conditions, providing high-resolution observational evidence for studying key processes of Arctic sea ice. The "Haishao-2 / AIRSAT05" satellite, internationally recognized as the first fully polarimetric wide-swath X-band spaceborne SAR, features a maximum imaging swath exceeding 300 km. It was successfully launched on August 19, 2025. The satellite is equipped with onboard intelligent “imaging-detection” processing capabilities and satellite-to-ship communication functions, specifically designed to address China’s urgent needs for extensive
polar and open-ocean observation. The development of the "Haishao-2 / AIRSAT05" satellite was supported by National Key Research and Development Program of China.
