The cover image shows a video imagery of Sydney Harbour and its surrounding areas in Australia, captured by the Luojia3-01 satellite (Also known as Shuangqing-1 and Yantai-1), courtesy of Wang Mi, Dai Rongfan, and Cheng Xu from the State Key Laboratory of Information Engineering in Surveying, Mapping and Remote Sensing (LIESMARS) at Wuhan University. The image clearly presents iconic landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, while capturing detailed distributions of dense urban buildings, water bodies, and islands. The video imaging also enables real-time monitoring of the motion states of moving targets such as ships, fully demonstrating the satellite's capability to precisely acquire surface spatial information. Luojia3-01 is the world’s first internet-based intelligent remote sensing scientific experimental satellite. It was successfully launched on January 15, 2023, at Taiyuan, China, and was jointly developed by Wuhan University and DFH Satellite Co., Ltd., among other institutions. The satellite features a spatial resolution of 0.7 m and a swath width of 10 km, and integrates four core functionalities: multi-mode imaging (High-definition video, stereo, and continuous regional imaging), onboard intelligent processing (Real-time processing), internet connectivity (Two-way communication between satellite and mobile phones to serve the public), and an open platform (An onboard algorithm verification platform supporting app updates). Luojia3-01 combines remote sensing and communication capabilities, pioneering an efficient and intelligent service model for surveying, mapping, and remote sensing information—from data acquisition to end-user applications. It serves as a realistic service validation platform for onboard processing and real-time transmission of remote sensing data via space–ground integrated networks. This satellite is of great significance for advancing China’s space-based real-time intelligent service system (PNTRC) and the construction of space information networks.
